THE RAZ REPORT:
AMSOIL AMA Arenacross
Sleep Train Arena, Sacramento
~ February 8th, 2014 ~
Prepared for publication in the March 2014 issue of
Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal

The weather forcast for the weekend is cold and rainy, so, what better to do than GO TO THE RACES - the AMSOIL Arenacross races that is. AMSOIL Arenacross is indoor off-road motorcycle racing on a man-made dirt track filled with jumps, turns and other various obstacles. New professional riders who want to earn their license to compete in Monster Energy Supercross must first race in select rounds of AMSOIL Arenacross - this ensures only the fastest young riders on the planet will compete in the Monster Energy Supercross.

We arrived early for the "Pit Party" where spectators were able to walk onto the track and meet riders and get autographed pictures. Spectators ranged in all ages, youngins barely able to see over the table top, high-school kids, parents and old geezers.

The little beginners on the 50cc mini-bikes were fun to watch, a lot of falling down - getting right back up and getting back in the race! Some of these little dudes were actually getting air when they went over the rise at the finish line. They were also fun in the winners' circle interviews , e.g., "what were you thinking about during the race, did you know you were winning?" "no, I was just riding, riders were falling all over the place but I just kept on riding," or, "is there anyone you would like to thank, like your sponsors?" "no, I don't have any sponsors" (reckon his parents have bucks).

The 250cc bikes were fun to watch too, a lot of rubbin' (you're not racing if you're not rubbin'), not a lot of falling down and a LOT of getting air when they went over the rise at the finish line, often one after another, and, often side by side, and, while "in the air," some of the riders were looking over their shoulder to check their lead, some were making adjustments with their left hand, some were twisting their bike sideways and back - looked to me like a lot of them were having fun but I suspect all of their arms must have felt like Jell-O after an evening of bouncing, especially over the whoop-t-doo's in front of me where either the bike was in the void and the riders legs were out straight, or, the bike was on top of the hump and the seat was slapping the rider's ars!

Thanks are in order to Rachael of the Sleeptrain Arean Security staff for helping me find the registration booth and the event offices, and, to Mike of the AMSOIL AMA Arenacross for help in securing my Media Pass. OK, so there you have it - bad weather is no excuse for not having motorcycle fun - check out local events and rock on.

KNUCKLEHEADS FOREVER!

Post Script: used my new Nikon DS3200 in "automatic" mode to record this event; lesson learned: next time out photographing fast moving subjects (up to 125 mph), set the camera to manual settings and use at least 1/1000th second shutter speed instead using the camera's default programmed mode.
